CAPE TOWN is Pio’s first show with SMITH and marks the official opening of the gallery. This exhibition brings together a body of work that Pio has created by engaging with his home city Cape Town. Pio observes the sights, colours, sounds and tastes of Cape Town in the form of painting, printmaking and sculpture – resulting in a witty celebration of this city.
He continues to explore his fascination of minerals and brings to this body of work a new and wondrous mix of gemstones, transforming and objectifying their abstract facets to create luxurious and intriguing shaped canvases. Pio’s obvious love and understanding of design is evident in his use of recognizable imagery such as the Granandlilla Lolly, De Waal Park gates, and his nod to the iconic Milton Glaser logo reinterpreted, placing Cape Town in the league of New York as a destination city.
Each print has been carefully composed by combining colour to represent iconic CT sites such as the Bo-Kaap & Clifton 2nd Beach. He also ventures into Sculpture by reclaiming surfboards and reintroducing them as luxury items.
