Maxhosa Knitwear by South African designer Laduma Ngxokolo, never ceases to pique the senses. Inspired by the vibrant colours and graphic designs of Xhosa beadwork, Laduma’s creations go beyond the ordinary jersey. With it’s origin steeped in the cultural tradition of initiation (a man is expected to burn all his old clothes and replace them with new ones to represent the coming of a age and stage in life) Laduma wanted to create an alternative to the initiates much favoured western knitwear brands and popular argyle patterns with one that more appropriately reflected the pride and culture of the Xhosa people. This combined with the global “tribal” fashion trend has escalated Laduma into the limelight.
