Exploring the border-zones between fashion, performance and contemporary art, acclaimed South Africa artist  Athi-Patra Ruga, makes work that exposes and subverts the body in relation to structure, ideology and politics.

His latest works – The Future White Women of Azania Saga – is a vibrant explosion of colour and texture. Ruga’s creation of  “alternative identities and close-to-home mythical characters” are a feast for mind and eye. It is undoubtedly one of the most exhilarating exhibitions I have seen this year. My personal favourite?  “Trust no Bitch” – in wool, thread, glue and glitter on a tapestry canvas creating a tropical backdrop for complex identities.

Currently on exhibition at What if the World Gallery.

  • Rozanna Snakeskin Derby Sneaker, House of Montague

I am mad about Danish men’s footwear brand: House of Montague. They know exactly how to merge creative design and functionality. And how cool is the Rozanna Snake – snake embossed cow leather – from their Striking Gold collection?? It’s a modern take on the classic derby shoe, complimenting not overpowering the iconic shape. The silhouette is features an Achilles heel protector, fusing classic sneaker facets with menswear tailoring and paying homage to both worlds. The wooden buckles, typically associated with the iconic duffel coat, are added as yet another tribute to classic menswear.  No wonder the House of Montague’s philosophy is “Style is determined by character”! • Genuine Leather Boom-box Weekender Bag R6900, Missibaba

The genuine leather Missibaba Boom-Box weekender bag is printed with a tribal inspired diamond graphic, and features matching printed canvas lining. Bang on the global trend of ethnic tribal prints – an ongoing craze that doesn’t show signs of stopping – it’s the perfect “I’m-a-man-in-the-know” carryall.
