MAN IN THE MASK
During the COVID-19 pandemic masks have become valuable allies and are now an everyday necessity. But how does one’s skin react to the frequent wearing of a mask?

Hello ‘Maskne’, the latest and not-so-glamourous term to enter the world of COVID-19 and personal care. As the name suggests, Maskne, is acne that results from wearing a face mask, or dermatologically known as acne mechanica. This type of acne is commonly triggered by sweat, friction, and pressure on the skin and causes inflammation, unpleasant red rashes and tiny clusters of pimples around the nose and mouth specifically. Cetaphil®, a leader in gentle skincare products, shares some tips to help take care of your skin while wearing a mask.

Choose the right mask: It is recommended to use a mask with three layers, selecting a non-woven (or similar) fabric with strong filtering capability as the middle layer, and the accompanying inner and outer layers for comfort, structure and some additional protection. It is recommended to wash re-usable masks regularly as they are prone to collect dirt, oils, bacteria, and germs, which may exacerbate skin problems.

Include a gentle skin cleanser into your skin care routine: Select a skin cleanser like Cetaphil® Gentle Cleansing Bar (127g), a non-soap cleansing bar gentle enough to use daily for face and body cleansing in the bath or shower. Specially formulated for even the most sensitive skin it is non-comedogenic, non-irritating and hypoallergenic.

Don’t forget to include a gentle face scrub: Gentle enough to use daily Cetaphil Extra Gentle Daily Scrub (128ml) is a facial cleanser that removes dirt, oil and impurities while micro-fine granules buff away dry, dull skin to support natural surface cell turnover. Infused with skin conditioners and a vitamin complex, it leaves skin feeling soft, smooth and radiant.

Create a skin care barrier by using a moisturiser: After your daily morning exercise and post cleansing, apply a moisturiser like the Cetaphil® Moisturising Cream 453g. A soothing, creamy formulation containing emollients and humectants that bind water to the skin to prevent moisture loss without clogging pores.

Don’t forget Sun Protection: Even in the colder months: Although half of one’s face is covered by our face masks, it is still important to apply an SPF on a daily basis, as some of the skin is exposed to the harmful sun rays when outside. Opt for Cetaphil Sun SPF50+ High Protection Lotion (200ml) a non-comedogenic and oil-free option that also works to decrease excess oil that can clog pores and lead to acne.
