MOD SQUAD

It’s quite apparent there’s a nod to all things “sixties” in fashion this summer – whether casual or formal wear. The most obvious indication of this trend in menswear is the revisiting of prints that were popular in the sixties.

The polka dot is a firm menswear favourite – today we see it being incorporated as a graphic print in men’s casual wear along with other popular motifs of the sixties like plaid and houndstooth. However stick to wearing one printed item at a time – what may have been considered psychedelically cool in the sixties is not the desired effect in today’s interpretation of the 60’s trend.

EAU ‘D TO ANDROGYNY

Yves Saint Laurent Oriental Collection Noble Leather is another in the ever growing offering of unisex fragrances as more and more fashion houses and parfumeries embrace androgyny.

It’s truly a beautiful blend of mandarin and saffron, mixed with the carnal sensuality of tanned leather and ambery wood, languid vanilla and earthy patchouli and softened with the candied sweetness of dried fruits to create a juice that is intensely beguiling and irresistably attractive.

Fashion: TOM TAILOR DENIM SHORTS

  • Relaxed Denim Shorts, R 599.95, Tom Tailor

A SUMMER STAPLE

As the days are getting hotter, it will soon be time to ditch those jeans and chinos and find yourself a pair of stylish shorts – denim shorts of course. They’re comfortable, easy and uncomplicated.

While there aren’t hard and fast rules when it comes to the length of your shorts, there is definitely a sweet spot to aim for: a knee length finish gives you a more relaxed feel that is suited to casual atmospheres, but they should certainly not extend any further, they are shorts after all. This pair of denim shorts from Tom Tailor will be the perfect addition to your summer wardrobe.

PUTTIN’ STYLE ON THE MAPS!

Maps Maponyane releases his first fashion label, collaborating with online retailer Spree.co.za. Most of us are, by now, familiar with Maps Maponyane: local A-lister, actor, model and South Africa’s best-dressed man title holder.

Spree is proud to reveal the expansion of the relationship that sees Maps flex his designer muscle and collaborate with the online retailer to design and locally produce his first fashion label: The MapsXSpree Collection.

Each item in the collection is Maps’ interpretation of a classic menswear summer staple. “My main focus for the range was on versatility and practicality of the items. Being able to layer and play around with them – shirts tucked in, or out – keeping things adaptable so that men can make their look personal”, says Maps

Now South Africa men can easily share in Maps’ recognised sense of style. “I wanted to be able to develop a label that interprets elements of my own sense of style in an accessible way and that talks to those that have shown interest and are following my journey: this was my main aim with the collaboration. Spree gave me a unique opportunity of bringing men fashion that I love to wear”.

MOD REBEL

When it comes to pop culture, the cliché eventually turns into the quintessential – we’re talking scooters gangs and music enthusiasts. With the “mod” style that originated in London in the late 50’s, it makes perfect sense for Ben Sherman to embrace its British roots with a SS15 collection inspired by the British weather.

From stylish bomber jackets to micro printed shirts and fitted tees, it’s time to look sharp, whatever the conditions. Mod fashion at its finest. Casual or formal, whatever it is, Ben Sherman’s timelessness integrates effortlessly with your personal style.

While the iconic Moorea* standard length swim trunks (from R1950 to R2750 per pair) are a must-have beach or poolside item, we’re particularly liking this summers addition to the range – the new shorter, Merise flat front swim trunk (from R3250) as well as an elasticated, drawstring Mahina swim trunk (from R2750) that can be folded into its back pocket and made from a woven fabric called ‘sushi’. Fashion: DIESEL GOES POP RIOT

Written by | Found in: Fashion Style | Posted on: 10 Nov 2015 - 8:43 am
  • DIESEL POP RIOT COLLECTION

A MOVEMENT OF FREEDOM

Diesel is never just a pair of jeans. It is a statement of personality, a way to express yourself. Reimagining the fabrics and styles worn by bikers of the 1950s and punks of the 1980s, Diesel is treated to another rebellious outing – Pop Riot.

“I was inspired by the spirit of the wolf. Wolves have both a sweet and aggressive side, and that duality in their nature is key. They are very free. They have no boundaries on what to wear for day or nighttime, what is dressy or what is casual — it’s all mixed up together in a modern way.” – Nicola Formichetti, creative director, on the Diesel Pop Riot collection.

Taking inspiration from the rebel youths of rockabilly `50s through to the punk defiance of the `80s to the house and grunge influences of the `90s, Pop Riot delivers a range of renegade silhouettes like truckers, and biker jackets and skinny pants are lifted with leathers, sewn on patches, spikes, studs and vibrant colour combinations.
